6 Healthy Snacks I’m Loving While Traveling
Experiencing the culture of a new place through good, local food is wonderful! Feeling my best self while doing so is even better. Here are my top, high-protein snacks that I love while traveling.
One of the greatest parts of traveling is experiencing the culture through good, local food. I will always remember the creamy pesto gnocchi & vibrant lemon pasta that Will and I shared to the tunes of pure Italian music at the lovely Angelina’s on a small island off the coast of Italy (Capri). Another outstanding dish was the salty, sun-dried and grilled fish in Paros, Greece fresh from the Mediterranean (a.k.a Gouna). Paired with some crispy zucchini fritters, we visited this local restaurant multiple evenings on our trip. Now that all of my vacation memories are flooding back, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the rich, hand-made pistachio gelato that was a creation from our 4 hour cooking experience in the hills of Tuscany. Oh such delightful flavors! It is these flavors and combinations that I feel I experience the richness of different cultures. I also get my inspiration for cooking in my own kitchen from these delectable experiences.
Immersing myself in new cultures through travel and local food is something I am beyond grateful that I have been exposed to over the years. I have also learned that while traveling, my body does appreciate some consistency so I can continue to feel like my best self. This doesn’t mean missing out on any of the delicious culture dishes, but it does mean adding in something a little extra to ensure my body feels supported. By packing healthy snacks and staying hydrated, I can ensure I am supporting my immune system and overall health, so I will have the energy to experience and explore everything along the way. Though snacks can be super processed and lacking nutrients, these are my top picks that provide my body with nourishment and fill any gaps that my diet might be missing while traveling. My focus is on minimal ingredients, high-protein, and nutrient dense foods. Many of these can be found at local grocery stores, gas stations, or picked up in advance and packed in your luggage. I often find that local grocery stores in other countries can be a fun way to find new or different brands that may not be available at home.
6 Healthy Snacks I’m Loving While Traveling
Fresh Fruit
Apples and bananas are my go-to fruits while traveling because they are a great source of fiber and are pretty low maintenance when it comes to moving from place to place. Not to mention, they are budget-friendly as well!
Meat Sticks
This is a great high-protein option, which many of us may need a bit more of when we are traveling and eating different from our normal routines. I love the Chomps Turkey sticks (which are Whole 30 approved), but there are lots of brands with minimal ingredients.
Bone Broth Packets
Supporting your gut can lead to an even stronger immune system. When traveling you are exposing yourself to so many things, so it’s great to ensure your immune system is well supported. I love the Bare Bones Chicken Broth Packets which strengthen the gut and provide an easy on-the-go protein source.
Hard Boiled Eggs
If you have access to a fridge on your travels, hard-boiled eggs are a great way to add some extra protein to your day. This snack often finds its way into many hotel breakfast buffets as well. I love the Vital Farms Hard Boiled Eggs, but a local grocer may have some other options as well.
Tuna Packets
If you need a quick meal in a pinch, the Wild Planet Tuna packets are great to have on hand. You could also pick up some GF crackers or carrots for dipping. An avocado could also be a great addition to make it a full meal - with protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats, this will give you the energy you need to continue on with your adventures.
Protein Bars
While this might be obvious, it’s important to note what kind of protein bars you are bringing along with you on your travels. Look for bars that have few ingredients and better yet, ingredients that you can read and understand. I love the Aloha Protein Bars because they don’t have a bunch of additives. RX bars and LARABARs are also good options for a quick and easy snack.
